Celebrate the 2007 Chinese New Year with us!! |
The Chinese New Year generally starts in January or February (the date depends on the timing of the new moon). This year, the Chinese New Year starts on Sunday 18th February 2007.
An animal is used to represent each year. It is said that Buddha asked the animals to meet him at the time of the Chinese New Year. Years are named after the twelve animals which participated, repeated in a cycle every 12 years. It is believed that people born in each animal's year share some of the features of the animal's personality.
2007 is the year of the boar (pig). People born during the year of the boar (1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007) are associated with fertility and virility. To bear children in the year of the boar is considered very fortunate, for they will be happy and honest.
This year's Chinese New Year celebrations in London Westminster are on Sunday 18th February. The timetable is as follows:
Grand Parade (along The Strand, Trafalgar Square, Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue). The parade will assemble in Exeter Street and finish in Rupert Street (south side) at approximately 1pm.
Chinese arts and entertainment on the stage in Trafalgar Square. Highlights will include performances by visiting artists from the Guizhou province in China. |
Firecrackers in Leicester Square (there will also be Chinese stalls there and in Chinatown) |
Please be aware that a one way system for pedestrians will be in place to ensure everyone can move around the area in comfort and safety. Access into Chinatown is from Shaftesbury Avenue only. For a map of the parade route, please click here.
